Synopsis

Cairo, Alexandria, Tel-Aviv, Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo, Palmyra... In a world torn apart, these cities have a common legacy:classical Arabic music. From Paris, director Florence Strauss traces the roots of this age-old art form, while at the same time shedding light on her own personal history-and breaking a family law in the process. Her grandfather Robert Hakim, who was born into a Jewish family in Cairo, broke all ties with the nationalist Egypt of the 1950s while working as a film producer in France (Pépé le Moko, Belle de jour). And he forbade his family to ever return to the banks of the Nile. This dual investigation, reinforced with numerous interviews, pays tribute to the musicians and poets who are transmitting a part of ancient history through the sounds of their voices, the melodies of their songs, the rhythms of their hands. Emphasizing openness and the power of cross-currents, this film celebrates a sensual land once associated with the garden of Eden. As music of the heart above all, the film expresses the thousand and one nuances of our humanity and historical complexity.
