Synopsis
There is no society without right and wrong, and there is no society without sin. But every culture has its own list of favorite sins. In Late Antiquity a group of Christian theologians drew up what came to be one of the most influential of those lists—the Seven Deadly Sins. These sins—pride, sloth, gluttony, envy, anger, lust and greed—are not forbidden acts but the passions that lead us into temptation.

Inspired by
the Aviad Kleinberg book “Seven Deadly Sins”,  Capital Sins will consist of eight short films, each approximately five minutes in length, showcasing eight Canadian Filmmakers who, with varying styles and approaches, will tackle each sin to give us a fresh perspective of these age-old sins. Our goal is to rethink the original list of Seven Deadly Sins and to determine an Eighth Sin that thrives in our contemporary society.

The short films, not defined by any specific genre, will be used on multiple platforms: as TV interstitials, together to form a larger TV program, and as part of an online interactive experience or as mobile shorts. Integral to the project is an interactive component with the working title
"What’s Your Sin?", that will utilize user-generated content, mobile GPS technology and multiple layers of interactivity to take the act of sinning from its Christian theological roots and place it within a social context. A theme as universal as sinning can generate multiple threads of discussion fuelling debate, emotion and opinion on multitudes of topics ranging from power to politics, philosophic, existential and religious diatribes. We strive to propagate this discussion by questioning the powers that exist in our society today and to what degree they determine and control our moral code. Keeping distance from a didactic approach, our aim is to create a space that is at once lighthearted and contemplative, witty and bold.
