A rare and special look into the world of Jewish religious married life and sexuality, a topic which has hardly been documented: The story of a family purification ritual, a hidden path of struggle for religious women in the framework of strict, masculine religious law that shapes the life of a couple and female sexuality.
The story of a subtle female rebellion within the religious world, expressed through the personal point of view of the director Anat Zuria, and the other women in the film, her friends Natalie, Katie and Shira. Their openness to the camera breaks a profound taboo of silence rooted in two thousand-year-old laws and contemporary social pressures.

From the Jury’s statement:
“ All members of the jury were touched by this pure, limpid, and honest film, which immediately sets its totally personal rhythm; that of its author. The serious and important subject is conveyed by a soft and calm voice, which does not need to raise its tone to talk forcefully.”
(Jury Statement, YAMAGATA International Documentary Film Festival, Yamagata, Japan, 2003)
“An extremely intimate topic is treated with great discretion and remarkable openness at once. The strength of the film lies not only in its choice of protagonists and in the proximity that the director achieved in her work with them, but also in the remarkable camera work”
(Jury’s statement, Int’l Documentary Film Festival Munich, 2003)
“A film which, in a pure, elegant and disciplined manner is an exploration of Orthodox Judaism in modern Israel and the religious dictates of Tehora, the once-taboo rituals of purity which married women are obliged to follow during menstruation. It is a film consciously, courageously and discretely directed and is artfully visualized”.
(Jury’s statement, “One World” film Festival, Prague, 2003
“For its aesthetic qualities and its mature and courageous approach to its subject. The filmmaker’s ability to take an inner voice and create an objective outsider’s perspective about the problems of religious women coping with halachic dictates, was surprising and authentic.”
(Jury’s statement, The Jerusalem Film Festival, 2002)
“Purity is the title of Zuria’s documentary film spotlighting the ambivalent struggles of religious women with what is called Taharat Hamishpacha (family purity), a set of strict religious laws that shape women’s marriages and sexuality.”
